The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of a calculated plot to transform Nigeria into a one-party state. This allegation arises amid widespread defections from opposition parties, including the PDP, Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which have been increasingly targeted in recent weeks.
The PDP articulated its position in a communiqué issued on Tuesday, following a national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja. The party believes that the ruling APC’s actions are driven by Tinubu’s fear of losing the 2027 elections.
In the communiqué, the PDP expressed strong opposition to what it termed the “sinister plot” orchestrated by the Tinubu-led APC to suppress opposition parties. The statement highlighted concerns of intimidation and threats directed towards political figures and democratic institutions in Nigeria.
“It is clear that this plot is borne out of APC’s mortal fear of inevitable defeat in 2027 due to its dismal failure in government,” the communiqué stated. The PDP reiterated its commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the right of citizens to engage freely in a multi-party system.
State of Affairs
The PDP also addressed the “sorry and melancholic” state of affairs in Nigeria, criticizing the APC government for its perceived insensitivity and ineffectiveness. The party condemned the rampant violence, including killings, banditry, and kidnappings, asserting that the federal government has failed to protect its citizens.
Moreover, the PDP demanded that President Tinubu discontinue policies that have exacerbated economic hardship for Nigerians and take concrete action to tackle the prevailing insecurity and economic recession.
In addition, the NEC confirmed the structures for the upcoming national convention, scheduled to be held from August 28 to 30. The committee for zoning national offices was also ratified, led by Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa, with Dauda Lawal of Zamfara and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau serving as vice-chairman and secretary, respectively.
The NEC resolved to take further consideration of the southeast zonal executive’s recommendations regarding the national secretary position at its next meeting on June 30.
