PDP in turmoil: Party halts screening for key national convention, cites ‘unforeseen circumstances’

In a move that has sent shockwaves through its ranks, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has abruptly suspended the screening of aspirants for its upcoming Elective National Convention. The exercise was originally scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

The last-minute postponement, announced less than a month before the high-stakes convention, has ignited concerns about internal discord and potential disruptions to the party’s carefully laid plans.

The decision was communicated in a statement by Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Governor of Adamawa State and Chairman of the party’s National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC).

“The National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has put on hold the screening of aspirants for the 2025 Elective National Convention… due to unforeseen circumstances,” the statement read.

The committee apologized for the sudden change and appealed for patience from aspirants and party members, promising to announce a new date promptly.

“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconveniences caused by the postponement,” the statement added, urging all members to “be guided accordingly.”

Despite the setback, Governor Fintiri sought to project an image of control, reiterating the committee’s commitment to a fair and successful convention.

“The NCOC remains committed to delivering a credible, hitch-free 2025 Elective National Convention on Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital,” he assured.

The PDP’s national convention in Ibadan is viewed as a critical juncture for the main opposition party, as it aims to reorganize its national leadership and present a united front ahead of the next general elections. The event is expected to draw the party’s top leaders, governors, and key stakeholders from across Nigeria.
