Police arrest 14-year-old house help for stabbing varsity lecturer to death

The Niger State Police Command on Tuesday paraded a 14-year-old girl, Joy Afekafe, for the gruesome murder of a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Dr. Funmilola Adefolalu.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abiodun Wasiu, Afekafe, a Senior Secondary school 2 student had served as the deceased’s housemaid for barely three weeks but was laid off due to her behaviour which the deceased could no longer condone.

The Police spokesperson said the teenager had admitted to the murder after interrogation; as she confessed that she had visited the lecturer’s house to confront and deal with her for sending her away.

Remember that on Sunday, the lecturer’s body was found in a pool of her own blood with multiple stab wounds.

Amongst other things, the accused further confessed to the police that when she was sacked, she reported the matter to her classmates, simply identified as Walex and Smart. Subsequently, they planned the attack and on the D-day, they went to the lecturer’s residence and attacked her.

“It was Walex who said that she would recognize us if we left her alive, so they started stabbing her with the knife we brought, I then struggled with the knife with them which made Smart enter her kitchen and take a knife there and they continued stabbing her.

“They stabbed her in her stomach, her hands, her legs and she was just shouting Jesus, Jesus. After all that, they took her phone and laptop and her car battery before we left the house in the motorcycle we came in”, Afekafe narrated.

Meanwhile, the police said they are still on the trail of Joy’s friends. The case, PPRO Wasiu explained is being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
