Police arrest community leader, five others over multiple rape incidents during Ozoro festival

The Delta State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into alleged cases of sexual assault, rape and molestation of young women in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

The development follows the circulation of disturbing videos reportedly recorded in Oramudu quarters during a local festival, which showed incidents of abuse involving several victims.

Condemning the act, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Aina Adesola, described the incident as criminal, inhumane, and a gross violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of the victims.

Police authorities confirmed that the chief organiser of the event, identified as Omorede Sunday, alongside five other suspects, including a community head from Oramudu, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The police boss has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, while tactical and investigative teams have been deployed to track down other suspects involved.

The Command also called on victims and witnesses to come forward with useful information, assuring that all reports would be treated with strict confidentiality and professionalism.

Residents of the state have been urged to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, as the police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and ensuring that all those found culpable are brought to justice.
