The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns linked to the misuse of vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police explained that the decision was taken after a review of recent crime trends showing that criminals increasingly use vehicles with tinted glass to conceal their identities while carrying out offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The Force clarified that there was no court order restraining it from enforcing the law on tinted glass usage. However, enforcement had earlier been suspended in the interest of public convenience, to give motorists enough time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit registration process without pressure.
According to the statement, the renewed enforcement has become necessary and urgent to curb the growing exploitation of tinted vehicles by criminal elements and to enhance public safety across the country.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the enforcement exercise would be carried out professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in strict compliance with existing laws. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to maintaining security while upholding the rule of law.
Motorists who require tinted glass permits were advised to apply through approved channels and ensure full compliance with legal requirements ahead of the January 2, 2026 commencement date.
