Reps in heated debate over emergency rule in Rivers

Members of the House of Representatives got into a heated argument as they prepared to debate President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The shouting match began even before the plenary session started.

This development comes after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday, citing the prolonged political crisis in the state.

The president also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the state assembly.

Additionally, Tinubu appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice-admiral, to administer the state.

According to Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the House of Representatives, President Tinubu consulted with the National Assembly before declaring the state of emergency.

Tinubu met with the leadership of the National Assembly, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, among others.

The House of Representatives is now in session, with President Tinubu’s letter seeking approval for the state of emergency in Rivers State set to be read during plenary. The legislators will deliberate on the matter, which has sparked intense debate and controversy.
