The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Lawmakers resolved to halt the process on Thursday during plenary in Port Harcourt, the state capital, after a motion was moved and adopted to discontinue the impeachment action.
The Assembly had earlier initiated impeachment proceedings at its first sitting of 2026, accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct.
The allegations included the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex and the approval of expenditures without legislative authorisation, among other claims.
Thursday’s decision signals a pause in the political tensions that have gripped the state in recent weeks.
