A Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, has sentenced a security guard, Emmanuel Buchi, to life imprisonment for the rape of a 37-year-old nurse at Greensprings School, Awoyaya, Ibeju-Lekki.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Rahman Oshodi found Buchi guilty of rape and assault causing harm, ruling that the Lagos State Government proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The incident occurred on November 27, 2021, during a night shift at the school clinic, where both the convict and the victim were on duty.
The judge described Buchi as a “pathological liar,” noting that his claim that the act was consensual collapsed under cross-examination. Justice Oshodi also observed that the convict showed no remorse and falsely alleged that the victim was his girlfriend, a claim contradicted by his own police statement.
According to the court, evidence showed that Buchi used force during the assault, while medical reports confirmed injuries consistent with the victim’s account. The judge stressed that a life sentence for rape is mandatory under the law and reflects society’s strong condemnation of the crime, especially given Buchi’s role as a security guard entrusted with protecting lives and property.
Buchi was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and three years for assault causing harm, with both sentences to run concurrently. His name will also be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register.
