Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have once again made history by winning their seventh African championship — and fifth consecutive title — at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket. The team triumphed over Mali in a thrilling 78-64 victory on Sunday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In response to their impressive feat, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the team for what he described as a “superb performance” that has brought pride and honour to Nigeria.
Led by Head Coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress overcame a slow start — losing the first quarter — but rallied back with skill and determination to dominate the game and lift the trophy once more.
Commending their efforts, President Tinubu praised the players’ “resilience, determination, and teamwork,” noting that their success serves as inspiration to young Nigerian women, much like the Super Falcons in football.
“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work,” the President said in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President also hailed Coach Wakama and her technical crew for their “exemplary leadership” as well as the Nigeria Basketball Federation for their sustained support of the team.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the team, especially as they begin preparations for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments slated for March 2026.
President Tinubu concluded by expressing his eagerness to receive the victorious team and their trophy in Abuja, while wishing them a safe return home.
