Suspected transformer thief electrocuted in Imo school

At the Government Secondary School in Owerri, Imo State, a man whose name is yet to be identified attempted to steal transformer cables.

According to reports, the incident took place early on Wednesday.

Mr. Iwu, the school security guard said that the suspect may have scaled the fence into the school at a late hour to get to the transformer, which the 1970 class of the Old Boys Association gifted to the school.

Mr. Iwu asserted that the electrocution most likely took place at the same time as the restoration of power by the electricity provider company at around 1am on Wednesday.

He clarified that the dead body was only discovered by the school administration in the morning inside the transformer that was barbed wire-fenced and situated to the left of the school entrance gate.

The school’s principal, Mr. Chukwujindu Anyikwa, who is also a member of the Old Boy association, commented on the incident. He said that after they became aware of it, they immediately notified the Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB) and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), both of whom later went to the scene of the incident.

The principal said that the DPO Shell Camp Police Station should be contacted after being directed to do so by the state Police Spokesperson, Henry Okoye.

He continued by saying that after checking in at the police station, they were instructed to go to the mortuary of the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Owerri with a police report before staff members arrived with an ambulance and removed the body.

The spokesperson for the Imo State Command, Henry Okoye, acknowledged the incident and the school’s authorization to hire more security guards, particularly at night, when approached for more information.
