19-year-old Nafiu Sulaiman who plotted his own abduction and extorted N365,000 ransom from his uncle, has been arrested by operatives of the Kano State Police.
Sulaiman, a resident of Garindau village in Warawa Local Government Area, Kano State had hidden himself in an unknown location for days and gave loved ones the impression he was abducted.
Sulaiman confessed that during this period, he was using different numbers to demand ransom from his uncle and boss, who employed him as a worker in his shop, where they sell cement.
The teenager further confessed that after he received the ransom from his uncle, he came out from his hideout, pretending to be freed from his abductors but was detained during investigation.
Sulaiman, while admitting to have committed the crime of self kidnap said he did it because he needed money to purchase new clothes and some other personal things.
Explaining how he committed the crime to newsmen, during his parade by the police on Friday, Sulaiman admitted he single handedly planned everything.
He said he only comes out from his hideout to buy food and was using another line to call his uncle for ransom.
Speaking further, he told newsmen he directed his uncle to where, and on how to drop the ransom, which he picked up after they left and rejoined his family pretending to have just been freed by his abductors.
Sulaiman noted that his joy was however shortlived as he spent only N20,000 and buried the remaining part of the money somewhere, where it was stolen by thieves.
Speaking on the incident, CP Muhammad Gumel, the State Commissioner of Police said during examination by the Police, the suspect could not give a coherent account of his kidnap experience.
He added that it was at this point Sulaiman who told the Police that he planned his kidnap to extort his uncle, was taken into custody.
