Tinubu charges acting IGP Disu to restore peace, rebuild public trust

President Bola Tinubu has tasked the acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, with restoring peace and strengthening security across the country.
The charge was given on Wednesday during Disu’s swearing-in and decoration ceremony at the State House, Abuja. The President said Disu’s appointment comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s security and expressed confidence in his capacity to lead effectively.
“I know your record and the dedication you demonstrated while serving in Lagos during my tenure as governor,” Tinubu said, urging the new police chief to reinforce discipline, deepen inter-agency collaboration, and prioritise the safety of lives and property.
Describing the assignment as demanding, the President assured Disu of his full backing. He called on him to lead with firmness and fairness, uphold professionalism at all levels, and work towards rebuilding public trust in the police amid ongoing security challenges such as banditry and terrorism.
Tinubu also commended the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his service and contributions to maintaining law and order.
In his response, Disu expressed gratitude to the President for the confidence reposed in him, noting that the appointment came unexpectedly. He described Tinubu’s remarks about his career as encouraging and pledged to live up to expectations.
The acting IGP promised to prioritise citizens’ welfare, emphasising that effective policing requires public cooperation. He also vowed to enforce zero tolerance for corruption and impunity within the force, while upholding human rights and boosting officers’ morale to confront insurgency and other security threats.
“All I need to do is channel their morale and thoughts to make things better,” Disu said.
