Tinubu hails Super Eagles’ AFCON bronze triumph

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles on their bronze medal victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, praising the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the President commended the national team for overcoming the disappointment of their semi-final loss to host nation Morocco and finishing the tournament strongly.

Nigeria secured the bronze medal after overpowering Egypt and defeating the seven-time African champions in a penalty shootout, following a regular-time encounter largely dominated by the Super Eagles.

President Tinubu said the players had once again demonstrated the determination, persistence and can-do spirit for which Nigerians are known.

“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” the President said.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.”

The President noted that Nigerians would be proud as the team receives their hard-earned bronze medals on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.

“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold,” Tinubu added.

The congratulatory message was signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, and dated January 17, 2026.
