Tinubu holds emergency meeting with security chiefs over rising terror attacks

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with top security officials at the Presidential Villa in Abuja amid growing concerns over renewed terrorist attacks in parts of the country.

The meeting, which lasted nearly two hours, was attended by key members of Nigeria’s security architecture, including Tunji Disu, the inspector-general of police; Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser; Christopher Musa, minister of defence; Adeola Ajayi, director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS); and Olufemi Oluyede, chief of defence staff.

Also present were the service chiefs: Waidi Shaibu, chief of army staff; Kelvin Aneke, chief of air staff; and Idi Abbas, chief of naval staff.

Although the presidency had not issued an official statement as of the time of filing this report, the meeting is believed to be connected to the recent surge in attacks by insurgent groups, particularly in Nigeria’s north-east.

Earlier this week, a commanding officer of the Nigerian Army was killed when suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province attacked a military base in Kukawa, Borno State. The incident followed another attempted assault by suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters on military positions in Ngoshe, Gwoza LGA.

On Tuesday, troops reportedly repelled another early-morning attack by suspected ISWAP fighters on a military base in Doron Baga, also in Kukawa.

Last Friday, during an interfaith breaking of the fast with members of the armed forces in Abuja, Tinubu expressed confidence that Nigeria would ultimately defeat terrorism and other forms of insecurity.

He also assured the military of continued government investment in modern equipment, intelligence gathering, and logistics to strengthen their operations.
