President Bola Tinubu on Thursday swore in Prof Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), charging him to serve with integrity and ensure the nation’s electoral process is beyond reproach.

During the ceremony at the State House Council Chamber in Abuja, the President stated that the upcoming November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election will be a critical test for the new INEC leadership. He emphasized the need for elections that are free, fair, and credible.
“Your nomination and the subsequent confirmation by the Senate are a testament to your capacity,” President Tinubu told the new chairman. “I trust that you will approach your responsibility with the highest level of integrity, dedication and patriotism.”
The President highlighted Nigeria’s 25-year democratic journey, acknowledging significant improvements in electoral systems while stressing the need for continuous innovation. He urged Amupitan to protect electoral integrity and strengthen INEC’s institutional capacity.
Professor Amupitan, 58, succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure lasted from 2015 to 2025. He was confirmed by the Senate on October 16 after outlining his plans to reform Nigeria’s electoral system and rebuild public trust during his screening.
The new INEC Chairman is expected to assume office immediately.
