Tinubu pauses trips to G20, AU–EU summits, orders massive security deployment to Kwara

President Bola Tinubu has postponed his planned trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, for the 20th G20 Summit and his subsequent visit to Luanda, Angola, for the 7th AU–EU Summit, citing urgent national security concerns.

According to a State House statement issued by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president opted to remain in Abuja to receive further security briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the deadly attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.

Tinubu, responding to a request from the Kwara State governor, directed the military and police to deploy additional personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area. He also ordered security agencies to track down the assailants responsible for the attack on church members.

The president expressed deep concern over the two incidents — the kidnapping of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and the violent assault on worshippers in Kwara — prompting him to suspend his foreign engagements.

Tinubu is now awaiting detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on his behalf, as well as from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) on the Kwara incident.

Reaffirming his directive to security agencies, President Tinubu stressed that every effort must be made to safely rescue the abducted schoolgirls and return them to their families.
