Tinubu sends heartfelt message to ‘awe-inspiring’ Super Falcons ahead WAFCON final

President Bola Tinubu has sent a heartfelt message of encouragement to Nigeria’s Super Falcons ahead of their crucial clash with host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tonight in Rabat.

In his goodwill message released on Wednesday, June 26, 2025, the President hailed the Falcons’ exceptional display of skill, discipline, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament, describing their performance over the past three weeks as “awe-inspiring.”

“You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength,” President Tinubu said. “In the pitch and off the pitch, you have demonstrated true sportsmanship.”

The President particularly commended the team for their gesture of compassion toward injured South African player, Gabriela Salgado, whom they visited after defeating Banyana Banyana in the semi-final. According to him, the act reflects “our shared humanity, empathy, and sisterly affection, which we Africans hold in high regard.”

President Tinubu noted that the team’s record speaks for itself — unbeaten in the group stage, resilient in the knockout rounds, and conceding only a goal in the semi-finals. He reminded the players that Nigeria had triumphed in all nine of its previous WAFCON finals and expressed confidence in their ability to win a record tenth title.

“To achieve the crowning accomplishment of lifting a record tenth continental title, we are all praying for your resounding success tonight,” he said.

The President revealed that a presidential delegation had been dispatched to Rabat to support the team on behalf of the Nigerian government and people. The delegation includes the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, among others.

He also extended gratitude to the families of the players, coaching crew, Nigerian supporters in Morocco, and the Nigerian Mission for their continued support.

“You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home,” Tinubu declared, adding that he looks forward to receiving the team and the trophy in Abuja.

The Super Falcons will be aiming to clinch their 10th WAFCON title when they take on Morocco at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
