President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian digital media influencers and young content creators to channel their influence toward national unity, truth, and economic development.
Speaking on Friday at the opening of the Progressives Digital Media Summit in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of responsible digital engagement, urging participants to verify information before spreading it online. The summit was themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development.”
“Your generation has recognised this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability,” President Tinubu said. “But as your influence grows, so must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility.”
He called on digital creatives to build businesses that generate employment, produce uplifting content, and promote unity across the country. “Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” the president stated.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s support for digital innovation, citing the National Digital Innovation Fund and policies designed to nurture a robust startup ecosystem. He, however, cautioned against the dangers of disinformation and cyber threats, warning that these could undermine progress if left unchecked.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, praised content creators who have used their platforms to project Nigeria in a positive light globally. He described them as the “vanguard of a reborn Nigeria,” working to build a more promising future.
In a goodwill message, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, raised concerns over the rising misuse of digital platforms. He noted that social media has become a chaotic and often unregulated public square where misinformation thrives.
“Divisive content is rampant. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents. Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections,” Onanuga warned. He expressed optimism that the summit would help develop strategies to counter fake news and misinformation.
Summit convener and Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Segun Dada, underscored the transformative power of digital media. He highlighted its evolution from a tool for personal connection to a critical force for innovation, influence, and national dialogue.
The event brought together digital media stakeholders, content creators, government officials, and policy experts to explore ways to harness the power of new media in advancing national development and social cohesion.
