Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have intensified security operations ahead of the festive season, dismantling a criminal gang that had been mounting illegal roadblocks and ambushing travellers in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
In a coordinated operation carried out on December 11, 2025, OPWS personnel, working alongside operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Zaki-Biam and the Benue State Community Protection Guard, acted on credible intelligence to confront the armed group operating along the Aturuku–Wembe–Ayati route in Borkyo Council Ward.
According to operational reports, the gang had been staging ambushes and dispossessing unsuspecting commuters at a blocked junction. Security forces engaged the criminals in a firefight, neutralising three suspects while others fled into nearby bushes. Two motorcycles used by the gang were recovered as troops intensified a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
Initial investigations identified the neutralised individuals as members of a notorious syndicate linked to persistent kidnappings and violent crimes across Ukum LGA, including recent abductions around the Zaki-Biam yam market. Community members later named two of the suspects as Sughter Abelebe and Sughnen Abelebe from Ugbaam Council Ward, and a third individual from Tse Kpeakaa in Kundav Council Ward. The group is also believed to be connected to a bandit kingpin operating within the Shitile axis of Katsina-Ala LGA.
The Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, commended the seamless collaboration among security agencies and praised the troops for their professionalism and bravery. He urged operatives to sustain the momentum, strengthen intelligence-led operations, and maintain a strong presence in high-risk communities.
Major General Gara reaffirmed the task force’s commitment to protecting lives and property, supporting civil authorities, and ensuring a peaceful and secure environment throughout the joint operations area as the Yuletide season approaches.
