Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following the hijacking of a passenger boat traveling from Nigeria to Cameroon.
The incident occurred on January 11, 2026, when suspected sea pirates attacked the boat along the Kombo Fishing Port area within Cameroon waterways. According to the Army, the attackers, who operated in two speedboats and a wooden boat, abducted the passengers after seizing the vessel.
A distress call alerted troops deployed at Ikang in Cross River State, prompting an immediate response by personnel of 13 Brigade. During the pursuit, the troops engaged the suspects in a gun battle, causing one of the pirates’ speedboats to capsize. The criminals subsequently abandoned the passengers and fled into nearby creeks.
All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed.
Commending the troops for their swift and professional action, the Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, said the operation reflected the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and securing Nigeria’s waterways.
He called on members of the public to continue to provide timely and useful information to security agencies, noting that community cooperation remains critical to effectively tackling criminal activities across Cross River State.
The Nigerian Army said the successful operation underscores 13 Brigade’s continued efforts to ensure safety and maintain security along regional waterways and border areas.
