In a foreign policy move, former U.S. President Donald Trump has redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” alleging that a systematic “genocide” of Christians is underway in the nation.
Trump announced the decision in a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, framing the situation as an existential crisis for the Christian population. “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed in a mass slaughter by radical Islamists,” he stated.
Declaring that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” Trump said he would formally direct the measure. “I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN’,” he declared.
To support his claim, the former president cited a numerical comparison, asserting that “3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide” Christians have been killed, though he did not specify the source of these figures or the time period they cover.
Trump announced that he has tasked Congressmen Riley Moore and Tom Cole, along with the House Appropriations Committee, to “immediately look into this matter.” The move signals a potential shift in U.S. diplomatic and aid relations with Nigeria, one of America’s key partners in Africa, should Trump return to office.
