UniAbuja expels 28 students, withdraws 15 certificates over misconduct

The Senate of the University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students over various disciplinary offences, including examination malpractice, cultism and falsification of academic records.

The decision was reached at a recent senate meeting, according to a statement issued on Sunday by Habib Yakoob, the institution’s Acting Director of Information. He said the action followed the consideration of the report and recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

The affected students were found culpable of offences ranging from examination malpractice, threat to life and assault, conspiracy, burglary and theft, to cult-related activities and possession and use of hard drugs. Some were also accused of falsifying ‘O’ Level results uploaded to the university portal to secure admission, while others failed to honour repeated invitations to appear before the disciplinary panel.

In addition, the senate approved the withdrawal of certificates previously awarded to 15 former students who ignored several invitations from the committee during the investigation process.

However, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing after thorough investigations, while 33 others received warnings for infractions including conspiracy, hostel racketeering and fighting.

The Vice-Chancellor, Hakeem Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding academic integrity. He stressed that the institution would continue to enforce its rules without compromise to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.

Prof Fawehinmi also commended the Student Disciplinary Committee for what he described as a diligent and transparent handling of the cases, urging students to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid actions that could jeopardise their academic careers.
