Former tennis world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic and retired German footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger have officially ended their nine-year marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
The split was confirmed by Ivanovic’s lawyer, Christian Schertz, in a public statement on Wednesday, marking the end of one of sports’ most admired power couples.
Ivanovic and Schweinsteiger tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Venice in July 2016 after two years of dating. Their relationship began in 2014, during Schweinsteiger’s time at Bayern Munich, and continued as he transferred to Manchester United in 2015. That same year, Ivanovic began winding down her tennis career, ultimately retiring in December 2016 after winning 15 WTA titles, including the 2008 French Open.
The couple shares three sons. While the names of their first two children, Luca and Leon, are known, the name of their youngest son—born less than two years ago—has not been publicly disclosed.
Rumors of marital difficulties had circulated for several months. In April, German media reported the couple was experiencing a “deep crisis,” reportedly fueled by diverging lifestyles. Schweinsteiger’s growing media and punditry commitments frequently take him across Europe, while Ivanovic is said to have spent increasing amounts of time in her native Serbia, surrounded by close family in Belgrade.
Their last public appearance as a couple was at the Laver Cup in Berlin in September 2024. Although they later shared a joint photo during the Christmas season, their once-active social media updates about family life gradually dwindled.
Despite the separation, both parties have requested privacy as they continue to co-parent their children.
