A resident of Kano state, simply identified as Habiba has been sentenced to three months in prison by a sharia court for abusing one of her friends named Rukayya Muhammad and for especially tagging her a prostitute.
The police in the state arraigned Habiba before the court after investigating a complain by Rukayya who alleged that the suspect, her friend, had addressed her as “sharmota” a slang in hausa language used to denote prostitutes.
The complainant had brought evidence that the suspect had addressed her as sharmota on her whatsapp status and had also sent same message to another unnamed mutual friend residing in Saudi Arabia.
The suspect who pleaded guilty when the charges were read to her begged for leniency.
In view of her plea, Mallam Sani Tanimu Sani Hausawa, the presiding judge during his ruling on Friday, found the suspect guilty of the wrongdoing.
Mallam Hausawa therefore ordered that the offender either spends three months in prison or pay a fine of N40000.
Habiba was also ordered by the court to use same communication means she used to offend the complainant and tell them that she was lying and is now begging for forgiveness.
