33-year-old old robber names Police inspector as accomplice

Akeem Owonikoko, a 33-year-old suspected armed robber, arrested along the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode-Benin Highway by Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command on Sunday, has named a Police Inspector as an accomplice.

SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police spokesperson said the suspect who disguised as a local security personnel, popularly known as vigilante was arrested in an operation led by ACP Omosanyi Adeniyi, the Ijebu-Ode Area Commander.

Odutola said the suspect who was driving from Ososa to Ijebu-Ode in the vigilante uniform tried to outsmart the police by diverting into a close, on sighting the operatives on patrol.

She added that when the suspect was apprehended with arms and interrogated, he named one Ola, who he said is an Inspector with the Nigerian Police Force as the agent who procures the arms they use to operate.

The police spokesperson said the suspect confessed that though he has masterminded several criminal activities in the community and state at large, he does not operate alone.

Part of her statement reads: “On searching the vehicle he earlier abandoned, a black cellophane bag containing 32 expended cartridges, 78 live cartridges and a locally-fabricated shotgun were recovered.

“Also, a search warrant was also executed at his residence.

”There, another Magnum pump action rifle, one double barrel shotgun, one locally-fabricated double barrel pistol, stunt pistol chocker, an unregistered silver colour Toyota Camry and Green-coloured Toyota Sienna Bus marked KNN 58 TD Ogun were recovered.

“Others are a liquid chemical, a black beret with insignia of Eiye Confraternity, cannabis, hard drugs, ATM cards, power bank, two Apple wristwatches, two cell phones and poisonous charm were also recovered.

“The suspect and exhibits would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for profiling and forensic examination.”

The PPRO further disclosed that CP Abiodun Alamutu, the state Commissioner of Police who is committed to ridding the state of criminals, has ordered the police to ensure they apprehend the remaining suspects.
