Ogun State former deputy speaker, Dare Kadiri, has been arraigned by the state police for causing a breach of peace and threat to lives.
The 54-year-old ex-speaker was dragged to court on Wednesday, 24-hours after he used his car to block the entrance gate to the State House of Assembly located at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, thereby forcing workers to trek through a foot path into the complex.
Kadiri was arraigned shortly after he was invited by the police, who persuaded him to take his car away from the entrance of the State House of Assembly.
The resident of No 1 Maba Close Ago-Iwoye, who represents Ijebu North State Constituency 2 at the Assembly, was arraigned at the Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on a two-count charge of threat to lives and causing breach of peace.
Kadiri, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, when they were read to him.
Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, the prosecutor, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Tuesday at about 8:40 am at the Ogun State House of Assembly in Oke-Mosan.
He further said that the defendant came into the premises of the Ogun House of Assembly and threatened the lives of lawmakers and other staff of the Assembly after using his car to block the entrance gate of the House of Assembly.
Olu-Balogun, also alleged that the ex-deputy speaker conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by mounting an attack which disrupted the lawmaking process of the assembly.
While adding that the defendant had been on suspension since March 2022, the prosecutor said Kadiri told the police that the court had given a judgement asking him to resume as a lawmaker.
He said that the defendant claimed he came to resume office, going by the judgement delivered by the Ogun state High Court but that when the defendant got to the premises of the assembly, the security operatives at the gate denied him of gaining entrance into the House of Assembly.
The prosecutor, however, noted that the offence committed contravenes sections 86(1) and 249(D) of the criminal code laws of Ogun 2006.
Mrs M.O Osinbajo, the chief magistrate, who adjourned the matter to June 1, for trial admitted the defendant to bail by self-recognition.
