Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been taken back to detention despite a directive from the Federal High Court in Lagos for him to be granted bail.

During the court session, after Emefiele entered a not guilty plea to the two counts against him, his lawyer, Joseph Daudu, filed a request for bail on his behalf, arguing that the crime for which he was accused is one for which bail is allowed.

The court had granted him bail in the sum of N20 million and a surety in like sum to the two counts related to the alleged unlawful possession of firearms.

Emefiele will remain behind bars at the Nigeria Correctional Service until he complies with the bail requirements, according to Justice Nicholas Oweibo, who approved the bail.

A physical altercation broke out between officials of the DSS and the Nigerian Correctional Service about who would take Emefiele away from the court.

DSS agents were successful in removing the suspended apex bank governor from the court just a short while before this report was filed.

Emefiele, who was taken into custody by the DSS about a month ago following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, was driven to court in a white Toyota Hilux pickup van with the number plate concealed at about 9:23 am on Tuesday morning.
