The mother of the Spanish Football Association chief, Luis Rubiales has locked herself inside a church and gone on hunger strike in protest of what she called an “inhumane witch hunt” against her son.
Football governing body, FIFA had provisionally suspended Rubailes for 90 days, a development that has now forced the football chief’s mum to go on hunger strike.
Angeles Bejar, 72, said she would not eat until the “unfair treatment” of her son ends. Rubiales has been under fire since a newspaper published photos of him kissing Spain player, Jenni Hermosos on the lips following their Women’s World Cup triumph.
The photos sparked a debate about sexism and double standards in Spanish football, with some critics accusing Rubiales of taking advantage of his position of power. Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing.
The 46-year-old claimed the kiss was “consensual” but the player insisted she never consented to a kiss on the lips.
Bejar said she was “deeply saddened” by the treatment of her son and that she was “fighting for justice”. She said she would not give up her hunger strike until Rubiales was reinstated.
“I am not going to eat until my son is treated fairly,” she said. “This is an inhumane witch hunt and it must stop.”
The Spanish FA has said it is “aware of the situation” and that it is “looking into the matter”.
The hunger strike is the latest twist in a saga that has gripped Spanish football. It remains to be seen how long Bejar will continue her protest.
