‘It’s sacrosanct’ – Peter Obi reaffirms one-term presidency

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has reiterated his pledge to serve only a single term if elected president. He shared this commitment on his official X page on Sunday, emphasizing that effective leadership is measured by impact rather than duration in office.

Obi drew parallels to historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, both of whom left profound legacies despite short tenures. He highlighted that Lincoln served four years and Kennedy did not complete his first term, yet their ideals continue to inspire.

The former governor of Anambra State also referenced Nelson Mandela, who, despite pressure to extend his presidency in South Africa, chose to serve just one term, exemplifying leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people over personal power.

If elected in 2027, Obi asserted he will not exceed four years in office, reinforcing his promise as “sacrosanct.” He acknowledged the widespread skepticism among Nigerians regarding political commitments, particularly his own, but urged them to judge him by his track record of fulfilling promises during his time as governor.

Obi also addressed comments questioning his mental fitness for advocating a one-term limit. He argued that the Nigerian constitution allows for a renewable four-year term and that his commitment should not be seen as unhinged but rather as a return to principled leadership.

He concluded by stating that a focused leader can make a significant difference in forty-eight months, aiming to restore trust in governance through integrity and transparent leadership.
