The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, amid mounting internal tensions and a wave of high-profile defections.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, said a new date for the meeting would be announced in due course.
According to Ologunagba, the decision to postpone the NEC meeting was approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) at an emergency session held on Monday, in line with Section 29 (2)(b) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
Party sources, however, disclosed that the postponement is linked to the recent string of defections by senior members, including governors and other key stakeholders.
In what could be a major blow to the opposition party, Enugu State Governor, along with all elected and appointed officials in the state, is expected to formally defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday. There are also strong indications that more PDP governors may follow suit in the coming days.
“All NEC members are advised to note the postponement and await further communication on a new date,” Ologunagba said.
