US delegation hails progress in security cooperation with Nigeria

The United States has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to improve national security following a “productive and positive” meeting between the US Congressional delegation and Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

In a Monday statement on X , a member of the delegation and member of the US House of Representatives, Riley Moore, acknowledged that several concrete steps were discussed during the talks, which, if fully implemented, could significantly boost security across the country, weaken terrorist networks in the northeast, and curb attacks—particularly those targeting Christians in the Middle Belt, a matter highlighted as a key concern for both President Donald Trump and the delegation.

The delegation also commended President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian government for the rescue of 100 abducted Catholic schoolchildren in Niger State, describing the operation as a “positive demonstration” of improved responsiveness to the country’s security crisis and a sign of commitment to Tinubu’s emergency security declaration.

According to the statement, the US side’s sense of urgency was “positively received,” with both countries moving closer to establishing a cooperative security framework. The recently formed US–Nigeria joint task force was cited as a strong example of growing collaboration.

The delegation noted a clear willingness on the part of the Nigerian government to work with the United States on shared security priorities but emphasized that this openness must now be translated into tangible action.

While acknowledging that significant work remains, the delegation said progress is being made and expressed readiness for continued dialogue and the next steps in strengthening bilateral security cooperation.

“Peace be with you all. God bless the great people of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
