Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing prolonged internal crises and concerns over the party’s cohesion at both state and national levels.
The resignation, which takes effect from Friday, January 23, 2026, was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area. A statement confirming the development was issued on Friday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Governor Yusuf said his decision followed careful reflection and was guided by the need to protect the broader interests of the people of Kano State. While expressing gratitude to the NNPP for providing him a political platform since 2022, he noted that persistent leadership disputes and ongoing legal battles have weakened the party’s structure and deepened divisions among members.
According to the Governor, the internal disagreements have led to growing disenfranchisement within the party, creating uncertainty and cracks he described as increasingly irreconcilable. He emphasized that his resignation was taken in good faith, without bitterness, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and development in Kano State.
The political realignment extends beyond the Governor, as 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen in the state also resigned from the NNPP on the same day.
The resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who praised Governor Yusuf’s performance in areas including infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment, while accepting his decision to leave the party amid its lingering internal crisis.
