FAAN assures passengers of comfort as Lagos airport undergoes major upgrade

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reassured passengers of continued comfort and easy access at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, despite ongoing large-scale rehabilitation works.

The Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, gave the assurance on Wednesday after inspecting the newly constructed temporary departure terminal, which will serve passengers during the planned closure of Terminal One for comprehensive rehabilitation.

Kuku described the project as urgent, noting that Terminal One had been in operation for more than 48 years without any major upgrade. According to her, the rehabilitation is necessary to meet modern air travel standards and improve passenger experience.

“This upgrade is not only necessary but urgent to meet modern air travel demands. The comfort and seamless experience of every passenger remain our utmost priority throughout this essential upgrade,” she said.

She explained that robust temporary arrangements had been put in place to minimise disruption during the construction period, adding that FAAN was committed to delivering a world-class aviation gateway for Nigeria.

Kuku disclosed that the project is a priority of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, in recognition of Lagos as the country’s foremost aviation hub.

“This rehabilitation is being done for all Nigerians, to manage growing passenger traffic and build the infrastructure our country deserves,” she added.

She outlined a phased rehabilitation plan, which includes a full remodelling of Terminal One and the extension of Terminal Two with an expanded finger and apron.

According to her, the temporary 8,000-square-metre departure terminal is more than 90 per cent complete and will initially serve between five and six airlines. The facility is designed to handle up to 1,500 passengers during peak periods and will feature full check-in services, security screening and three boarding gates.

She also confirmed that supporting infrastructure such as car parks and passenger pickup areas are ready, with special attention given to accessibility for the elderly, children and passengers with reduced mobility.
