Nollywood actor Stanley Amadi arrested over alleged coup plot

Nollywood filmmaker and actor Stanley Amadi has been arrested in connection with an alleged plot by some military officers to violently overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Amadi, a film director and former chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), was reportedly arrested in September 2025 alongside serving and retired military officers accused of planning the illegal takeover.

This marks the first public disclosure of the actor’s alleged involvement in the foiled coup plot.

Security sources said Amadi was allegedly engaged by the plotters to function as a propagandist, tasked with producing and disseminating materials to advance the agenda of the conspirators. The alleged plan, according to officials familiar with the investigation, involved a violent seizure of power and the elimination of top government officials.

Those reportedly marked as targets included President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, among others.

Military Confirms Probe

On Monday, the Defence Headquarters publicly confirmed that some military officers had plotted to illegally remove the Tinubu administration. It announced that officers indicted in the investigation would be arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in line with existing laws and service regulations.
