Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not be used or weakened to enable another party take power at the centre in the 2027 general election.
Makinde made the statement on Tuesday at the inauguration of a newly constructed PDP Secretariat at Oke-Ado, Ibadan, built by the state government.
The governor admitted that internal decisions taken by some party leaders ahead of the 2023 presidential election contributed to the emergence of another party at the centre, but said he would not repeat such actions.
“In 2023, I was yoked with some individuals and that led to the emergence of another party. But I have repented; I will not go that way again,” Makinde said. “For anyone to want to hold PDP down so another party can be in power, the answer is no, no, no.”
He attributed the lingering crisis within the PDP to the actions of a few individuals, noting that those responsible were expelled from the party in November 2025.
“Whatever they are doing now, you should be able to trace it back to their origin,” he added.
On the party’s legal battles, Makinde said he had full confidence in the judiciary, describing it as the last hope of the common man and expressing optimism that justice would prevail in favour of the PDP.
A highlight of the event was the formal handover of documents of the newly built secretariat—named after a former state chairman of the party, Alhaji Omokunmi Mustapha—to Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, the factional national chairman of the PDP whose emergence was recently nullified by a court.
In his remarks, Turaki commended Makinde for constructing the secretariat and for his contributions to the growth and stability of the party.
It would be recalled that a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, on January 30, nullified the PDP national convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025, which produced Turaki as national chairman.
