‘No wiretapping equipment found’: El-Rufai’s wife, family reject ICPC claim

The family of Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has dismissed allegations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that phone-tapping equipment was discovered in his possession, describing the claims as false and malicious.

In a statement issued on Monday, the family said it was breaking its silence to counter what it called a “blatant lie” reportedly published by The Nation based on unnamed ICPC sources.

The statement, titled “ICPC’s Phantom Phone Tapping Equipment Allegations Against Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and the Constitutional Right to Silence: A Statement from the Family of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai,” accused the anti-corruption agency of engaging in a media trial.

“The family of Mallam Nasir el-Rufai has noted with a mixture of contempt and amusement the recent litany of allegations, falsehoods, and theatrical posturing emanating from the ICPC,” the statement read.

It further described the allegations as a “circus of chicanery,” alleging that the agency was more interested in prosecuting a media war than adhering to the rule of law.

“We are compelled to set the record straight and expose the malicious intent behind this orchestrated smear campaign,” the family added.
Also reacting, Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, wife of the former Kaduna State governor, took to social media to deny the allegation.

“I was there. No such equipment was found. They lie. But why? An agency with no credibility at all,” she wrote.
The ICPC has yet to publicly respond to the family’s rebuttal at the time of filing this report.

El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, has recently been the subject of political scrutiny amid shifting alliances and ongoing national debates.
The family concluded its statement with Ramadan greetings and a call for prayers for peace in Nigeria and across the world.
