Wike hails appeal court verdict, urges PDP unity

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has welcomed the judgment of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria which voided the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025.

The appellate court ruled that the party acted improperly by going ahead with the convention despite a subsisting court order directing compliance with conditions set by the Federal High Court of Nigeria.

Reacting in Abuja on Monday, Wike described the ruling as a victory for the rule of law and called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party to set aside personal interests, stop further litigation and embrace reconciliation.
He warned that taking the matter to the Supreme Court of Nigeria could further damage the party, especially with political party primaries expected to hold in April and May.

According to him, continuing legal battles would only weaken the opposition party at a critical time.
Wike urged aggrieved members to see the judgment as an opportunity to rebuild the party and work together for its future.

He noted that the court’s dismissal of several appeals with heavy costs underscored the importance of complying with statutory provisions, the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.

The minister said breaches of those laws meant the matter could no longer be treated as an internal party affair, thereby making judicial intervention necessary.

Wike added that the ruling effectively nullified the Ibadan convention and confirmed that the tenure of the previous party officers had expired.
He explained that the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee remains the legally recognised body managing the party’s affairs to prevent a leadership vacuum.
He also confirmed that preparations were ongoing for a fresh national convention scheduled to hold in Abuja on March 29 and 30.
