President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by George Akume. It applies to a wide range of officials, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal agencies, parastatals, commissions, and government-owned companies.
According to the circular, the decision aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 polls.
All affected appointees are required to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation no later than the stipulated deadline.
The presidency explained that the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, preventing abuse of office, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants. It also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting transparent and credible electoral processes.
The directive comes as political activities begin to gather momentum following the release of the electoral timetable for the 2027 general elections.
