Obi slams Tinubu over ‘no light’ remark during Jos visit

Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Tinubu over alleged remarks about poor electricity supply during his recent visit to .

Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, urged Nigerians to vote out the current administration in the next election, accusing Tinubu of failing to fulfil his promise to improve power supply.

In a post shared on X, Obi claimed that during a brief stopover in Jos on April 2, the president said he would leave within 10 minutes due to the lack of electricity at the airport.

According to him, the remark—“You have no light here, I fly out in ten minutes”—highlighted a disconnect between leadership and the daily realities faced by Nigerians, many of whom endure prolonged power outages.

Obi recalled Tinubu’s campaign pledge in 2023, where he promised to deliver stable electricity within four years or risk not being re-elected.

He further argued that power generation has declined since Tinubu assumed office, noting that Nigeria’s average electricity output has dropped below 4,000 megawatts, while tariffs have increased.

Obi also pointed to low electricity consumption levels, stating that Nigeria’s per capita usage remains significantly below the African average, underscoring broader challenges in the country’s power sector.
