INEC: 22 political parties have submitted their membership registers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have submitted their membership registers in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.

INEC’s Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, noting that the submissions were completed by May 8, 2026, two days before the extended deadline set by the Commission.

According to Haruna, the extension followed concerns raised by political parties during a meeting held on March 24, 2026, over the timeline contained in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election.

INEC had subsequently shifted the deadline for submission of party registers from April 21 to May 10, 2026, in line with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the schedules adopted by political parties for their primaries.

The Commission also approved April 23 to May 30, 2026, as the official period for the conduct of party primaries, while directing parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before their respective primaries.

Haruna stated that the Commission would now begin the verification of the submitted registers in accordance with the law.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible and inclusive elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
