President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on residents and business owners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to pay their taxes, land charges and ground rents promptly, stressing that compliance with civic obligations would enable the government to deliver more infrastructure projects across Abuja.
The President made the appeal on Wednesday during the commissioning of the completed Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way), which stretches from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Dape District, Abuja.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu described the road as a vital economic corridor that would ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity and stimulate investment opportunities within the nation’s capital.
He urged beneficiaries of the project to support government efforts through timely payment of statutory charges.
“To the residents and business owners enjoying this transformation, I urge you to meet your obligations. Pay your taxes. Clear your land fees and ground rents. Your compliance gives the FCT Administration the strength to build more roads like this one,” he said.
Tinubu recalled that the Gwarinpa I District section of the road was commissioned in June 2025, noting that his administration had fulfilled its promise to complete the remaining section.
According to him, the project was conceived, funded and delivered under the Renewed Hope Agenda after being awarded to Julius Berger Plc in October 2024 with a 15-month completion deadline.
The President said the successful completion of the project demonstrated his administration’s commitment to ending the era of abandoned infrastructure projects.
“We conceived it, we funded it, and we delivered it. In the past, projects like this became permanent budget lines—ten, fifteen years of excuses. Not under this administration,” he stated.
Tinubu commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure development in the territory and praised Julius Berger for delivering the project within schedule.
He noted that the road would significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity among Dape, Karmo, Gwarinpa I, Kado, Idu and Mbora districts, while also providing direct access to the Idu Industrial District to support business growth, investment and job creation.
The President further called on traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to protect public infrastructure from vandalism and ensure proper maintenance of drainage systems and streetlights.
Speaking earlier, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, said the commissioning formed part of a 31-day project inauguration programme organised to mark the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration.
He said infrastructure delivery in the FCT had expanded steadily over the past three years, adding that development had reached satellite towns that were previously neglected.
“For the first time, development has been taken to the satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory. This is unprecedented,” Wike said.
The minister also commended Julius Berger for completing both sections of the road project within record time and maintained that all affected property owners whose structures were demolished during construction received compensation.
In her remarks, Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as another milestone under the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it would improve transportation, boost economic activities and enhance the quality of life of residents across the capital territory.
