Iran shuts Strait of Hormuz again, accuses US of breaching peace deal

Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz once again, accusing the United States of violating a recently signed agreement aimed at ending hostilities in the Middle East.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the strategic waterway would remain closed until the US withdraws its forces from the Persian Gulf and Israel fully pulls out of southern Lebanon, conditions Tehran says were part of the agreement signed earlier this week by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

In a statement broadcast over maritime radio channels, the IRGC warned that any vessel attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz despite its directive would be targeted.

The development comes amid renewed Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, a move Iran says undermines the agreement. Switzerland has also announced the postponement of follow-up talks linked to the deal.

The accord was expected to end the conflict involving Iran, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and begin a 60-day negotiation process on broader issues, including Tehran’s nuclear programme. It also reportedly included a $300 billion reconstruction package for Iran.

Reacting on Truth Social, President Trump said Iran had been weakened by the conflict and dismissed suggestions that Washington was negotiating from a position of weakness. He insisted the US would not provide any financial concessions to Tehran and would allow the 60-day negotiation period to proceed.
