Tinubu sends state Police bill to senate

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted a Constitution Alteration Bill to the Senate seeking the establishment of state police across Nigeria.

The proposed legislation aims to amend relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution to provide a legal framework for state-controlled policing, a reform advocates say could strengthen local security responses.

The move follows repeated calls by the President for constitutional changes to allow states play a greater role in tackling insecurity. In February, Tinubu urged the National Assembly to support the creation of state police as part of efforts to combat terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes.

The proposal comes amid growing momentum for policing reforms, with both chambers of the National Assembly already considering measures to decentralise policing powers.

The Senate is expected to reconvene in an emergency plenary session to consider the bill, which could mark one of the most significant security reforms since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
