One person has been confirmed dead while 10 others have been rescued following the collapse of a three-storey commercial building at Alakija Bus Stop in the Ori-Ade Local Council Development Area of Lagos State on Thursday.
The building, which housed several shops and small businesses, caved in during business hours, trapping occupants beneath the rubble and triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene alongside officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other agencies.
According to LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the body of an adult male was recovered from the debris, while rescue teams successfully extricated 10 people alive with varying degrees of injuries. The victims have been handed over to medical personnel for treatment.
Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, earlier confirmed that several people had been rescued and noted that search efforts were ongoing for others who may still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
Emergency workers deployed heavy-duty equipment, including excavators, to clear debris and gain access to possible survivors. Authorities said indications suggest that additional occupants, including shop owners who had resumed business activities in the building, may still be under the rubble.
LASEMA appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid the area to allow rescue teams unhindered access to carry out life-saving operations.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined. Authorities said investigations will commence after rescue operations have been concluded.
