Former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, says the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, will restore electricity subsidies if elected president in 2027.

Amaechi made the statement on Thursday during ward visits across Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he delivered Atiku’s campaign message to residents.

He criticised the removal of electricity subsidies by the Bola Tinubu administration, saying the policy had significantly increased electricity bills for Nigerians.

According to Amaechi, Atiku would reverse the policy and ensure that government subsidies reduce the burden on electricity consumers.

Amaechi cited his personal electricity bill, saying he previously paid about N500,000 but now pays as much as N4 million.

He also blamed the removal of petrol subsidies for rising transportation and food costs, arguing that the policies had worsened the cost-of-living crisis.

The former governor further linked economic hardship to insecurity, saying farmers were increasingly unable to access their farms because of insecurity.

Amaechi said restoring subsidies under an Atiku administration would help reduce the cost of living and ease the economic pressure on Nigerians.

The federal government has, however, announced plans to phase out electricity subsidy payments from 2027. The government said it spent N3.14 trillion on electricity subsidies between June 2023 and December 2025 to cushion consumers from the impact of tariff increases.

Nigeria’s electricity tariff structure is divided into service bands based on the minimum number of hours of electricity supply customers are expected to receive daily, with Band A customers receiving the highest level of supply.
