The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has accused President Bola Tinubu of lacking the capacity to tackle insecurity and other challenges confronting Nigeria.
In a statement on Saturday, Abubakar Yusuf, APM national publicity secretary, said Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State and the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election, had a “blueprint” to address the country’s security challenges.
Yusuf also criticised Christopher Musa, minister of defence, over his recent claim that terrorist attacks were no longer rampant in Nigeria and that security had improved.
Musa had made the comments during a Channels Television interview on Thursday, saying troops were now moving into terrorists’ hideouts to rescue victims.
However, the APM spokesperson described the minister’s position as evidence that the Tinubu administration was either disconnected from the reality of insecurity or attempting to influence public perception.
Yusuf challenged Tinubu, Musa and other senior government officials to travel by road without armed security escorts if they were convinced that the country’s security situation had significantly improved.
He said the persistent insecurity demonstrated that the administration lacked a clear strategy for tackling the problem.
“Our nation cannot survive another four years under such a hopeless and incompetent administration,” Yusuf said.
He urged Nigerians not to lose hope, asking them to support Makinde in the 2027 presidential election.
According to him, Makinde was prepared with a comprehensive plan to tackle insecurity and other challenges which, he alleged, had worsened under the Tinubu administration.
The APM spokesperson’s comments come against the backdrop of several security incidents in Oyo State.
On May 15, gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, killing two people and abducting at least 45 pupils and teachers.
Thirty-nine schoolchildren and five teachers were subsequently rescued on July 10.
Yusuf said the incidents underscored the need for a more effective approach to securing lives and property across the country.
