Temitayo Ayodele, a soon-to-be graduate of Physics Electronics at the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba, Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, who was waiting to defend his project, was on Thursday, stabbed to death over a N1000 naira debt misunderstanding.

Temitayo who was allegedly stabbed with a pair of scissors around Ebenco filling, opposite Akua junction, Akungba, was rushed to Aduloju Hospital along Iwaro road where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Sources who confirmed the incident said Temitayo had intervened in a debt payment dispute between some indigenes who perpertrated the act led by one “Egbon Adugbo” and an unnamed third party, who was owing the indigenes the sum of N4,000, where the deceased promised to pay the debt.

Temitayo was said to have paid the perpetrators N3,000 naira out of the N4,000 naira with a promise to pay the remaining N1,000 naira outstanding at a later date, which he failed to raise and remit.

According to the source, Temitayo warned the perpetrators to stop disturbing him over the N1,000 balance, stating he was not the direct debtor but only rendered help, a development that angered the perpetrators, resulting in an argument that led to his attack and death.

The source said:

“A guy (the third party) was owing them money, and Temitayo told them (the perpetrators) that he will help the guy to pay the money to avoid drama.

“So he paid 3k out of the 4K and couldn’t raise the last 1k.

“So they started disturbing him and he said they should stop disturbing him that he did not owe them that he only rendered a help and on Thursday, a guy came into the villa.

“As usual they acted as Egbon Adugbo to collect money. So he said he can’t give them, which led into an argument as if they’d meant to deal with him … and they came from nowhere to stab him after a lot of arguments and they scattered the villa with bottles and spoiled our gate.”

Angry students of the institution took to the streets to protest the killing but were barred by the policemen deployed to the scene to prevent crisis between the students and indigenes of the town.

Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, who confirmed the incident, said the police were quickly drafted to the streets to prevent breakdown of law and order.

“An indigene had an issue with a student and one thing led to the other, he stabbed the student and this resulted to the student’s death,” she said.

“Students took to the street to protest; corpse was taken to the morgue by police.

“While on it, some people mobilised to the suspect mother’s house to set it ablaze, police and the people were there to put off the fire.”

The Command PPRO said although no arrest has been made, investigations are ongoing.
