Ghanaian rapper, Black Sherif was the big winner at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards that was broadcast on Tuesday night. He took home the coveted Best International Flow award dusting out a tough field of nominees that included Burna Boy, AKA, and K.O.
Burna Boy, who was the leading nominee with seven nods, went home empty-handed.
He lost the Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year and Best Live Performer of the Year categories to Kendrick Lamar.
Burna Boy also lost: Hustler of the Year to 50Cent and Best Collaboration of the Year for ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ feat, 21 Savage to Lil Durk and J. Cole’s ‘All My Life.’
This came as a huge surprise to many, as Burna Boy is one of the biggest stars in African music.
Nevertheless, industry watchers have stated that the BET Hip-Hop Awards are voted on by a panel of music industry insiders, and it is possible that they felt that Black Sherif was more deserving of the Best International Flow award.
In his acceptance speech, Black Sherif thanked his fans for their support and dedicated the award to his home country of Ghana. He also said that he was “honored” to be in the same category as Burna Boy, whom he called “a legend.”
