Ex-banker swindles two customers of ₦14.9m

Gift Igbinosun, a 35-year-old former banker, was arrested by the Edo State Police Command on July 20 for defrauding two persons of N14.9 million.

The victims, John Onuora Nnamdi and Obasogie Osagieduwa, had approached Igbinosun, who claimed to be a staff member of Keystone Bank, to help them exchange their old naira notes for new ones. Igbinosun told the victims that she could get them the new notes at a discounted rate, and they agreed to give her their money.

Igbinosun never returned with the new notes. Instead, she disappeared with the victims’ money.

Igbinosun was nevertheless paraded by the spokesperson of Edo Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, in Benin on Friday.

“They gave her the money with the hope that as she is collecting the money, she would replace them with new notes, not knowing that she was no longer working with the bank,” he said.

Igbinosun who spoke during the parade admitted that she used to give Nnamdi mint currency for a reasonable commission “but I couldn’t meet up any more, so I was owing him.

“The second person, Henry, I have returned N2.5 million to him, leaving the balance of N5.1 million.

“This has been going on for some months now. I was sacked by the bank about two years ago” she said.

So far, she has been charged with impersonation, conspiracy, advance fee fraud, obtaining money by false pretence, fraudulent conversion, and stealing. She is due to appear in court soon.
