Guard steals boss’ goods worth ₦17m

27 years old Abey Johnson who worked as a security man in the employ of one Oyetunji Atunwa was on Friday brought before a Chief Magistrate’ Court in Yaba with a charge of stealing.

Johnson who was arraigned on a two count charge was accused of not only theft but also for taking some other items which had been valued at N17m and selling them to unknown persons.

The police prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, told the court, presided over by Magistrate O. Y Adefope who was holding brief for L.Y Balogun, that Johnson had acted out his crime on April 16 around 7pm at No. 41/43, Chris Idowu Street, off Oke Bus Stop, Ejigbo.

According to the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under Sections 411 and 287 (5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

His charge read, “That you, Abey Johnson, and others at large, on or before April 16, 2023, around 7pm at No. 41/43, Chris Idowu Street, off Oke Bus Stop, Ejigbo, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 411 of the criminal law of Lagos state of Nigeria 2015.

“That you, Abey Johnson, and others at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did steal eight indoor air conditioners, five 32 inches LG Television, one swimming pool engine, two rolls of sandpaper, 100 empty paint bucket, one medium size domestic generator, two rolls of masking tape and four 2-in-1 solar security lights valued at N17m property of Oyetunji Atunwa and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 287 (5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

Afternoon the defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, Magistrate Adefope granted him bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till July 3, 2023, for mention.
